HER-2/neu (c-erbB2), Immunoperoxidase Stain
Performing Laboratory
Billings Clinic LaboratoryMethodology
The c-erbB2 gene encodes a transmembrane protein that may be detected by immunohistochemistry. Over-expression of this protein may be detected in 20% to 30% of breast cancers. HER2 over-expression may be a weak-negative, prognostic indicator of overall survival in patients with breast cancer; however, it may have value in predicting response to adjuvant chemotherapy in some situations.Specimen Requirements
See “Pathology Consultation.”Note: Immunohistochemical and histochemical stains are usually requested by a Billings Clinic Laboratory pathologist as part of a “Pathology Consultation.” In some instances, stains can be individually requested by a referring clinician (eg, estrogen and progesterone receptor stains). Fees vary depending on the complexity and number of stains requested.
