Performing Laboratory
Billings Clinic Laboratory: Coagulation
Useful For
- Used as an aid in the detection of platelet dysfunction.
- The most common causes of platelet dysfunction are related to uremia, von Willebrand disease (vWD), and exposure to agents, such as acetyl salicylic acid (i.e. Aspirin) or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.
Methodology
Platelet Function Analyzer (PFA)-ADP and/or Platelet Function Analyzer (PFA)-EPI
Specimen Requirements
- Do not transport specimen in pneumatic tube.
- Specimen must be hand delivered to laboratory, and test must be analyzed within 4 hours of draw.
- Draw a full, light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube.

Profile/Testing Information
Reflex Information:
- PFA-EPI is ordered when the request is for a reason of pre-operative aspirin therapy, abnormal bleeding, or response to treatment for von Willebrand disease. If this test is abnormal (high), PFA-ADP is reflexed onto initial order.
- PFA-ADP is performed if the PFA-EPI is high or if reason for PFA is postoperative.
This test may automatically reflex to other tests. An additional fee may be added. The ordering physician/provider must indicate if the reflex test is NOT DESIRED. Indicate on order if no reflex test is desired.
