Useful For
Screening for urinary tract diseases and infections and some nonrenal diseases
Methodology
Automated microscopic analysis by flow cytometry and fluorescence.
Specimen Requirements
- Submit 10 mL of urine from a first-morning specimen.
- Follow directions below for collection.
- Overnight incubation in bladder yields highest bacterial counts.
Males
- Clean glans with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride antiseptic towelette.
- Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
- While holding foreskin retracted, begin voiding.
- After several mL have passed, collect specimen without stopping flow of urine into a sterile urine container with tightly-fitting lid.
- Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
- Maintain sterility and forward promptly. If there is a delay in transport of ≥1 hour, send specimen refrigerated.
Females
- Thoroughly clean urethral area with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride antiseptic towelette.
- Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
- While holding labia apart, begin voiding.
- After several mL have passed, collect specimen without stopping flow of urine into a sterile urine container with tightly-fitting lid.
- Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
- Maintain sterility and forward promptly. If there is a delay in transport of ≥1 hour, send specimen refrigerated.

Profile/Testing Information
- A culture urine will reflex on urines with ≥3 bacteria, >10 red blood cells, or >10 white blood cells.
- If reflex testing is not desired, order Billings Clinic: #3011 “Urinalysis, Microscopic.”
- This test will automatically reflex to other tests as described above according to the criteria listed.
