Test Code Billings Clinic: 4810 Urinalysis, Complete Reflex Culture
Performing Laboratory
Billings Clinic Laboratory: Hematology
Useful For
Screening for urinary tract diseases and some nonrenal diseases
Methodology
- Automated Reagent Test Strips/Automated Microscopic
- Chemical analysis with reagent test strips
- Automated microscopic analysis by flow cytometry and fluorescence
- Specific gravity by refractive index
Specimen Requirements
- Submit 10 mL of urine from a first-morning specimen.
- Follow directions below for collection.
- Overnight incubation in bladder yields highest bacterial counts.
Males
- Clean glans with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride antiseptic towelette.
- Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
- While holding foreskin retracted, begin voiding.
- After several mL have passed, collect specimen without stopping flow of urine into a sterile urine container with tightly-fitting lid.
- Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
- Maintain sterility and forward promptly. If there is a delay in transport of ≥1 hour, send specimen refrigerated.
Females
- Thoroughly clean urethral area with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride antiseptic towelette.
- Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
- While holding labia apart, begin voiding.
Specimen Stability
Room Temperature - 2 hour
Refrigerated (Preferred) - 24 hours
