General Information:
Sometimes blood cells from a fetus can enter into the maternal circulation during pregnancy or at delivery. If blood type of fetus is Rh-positive and mother is Rh-negative, there is potential that the mother could build antibodies to the Rh-positive fetal cells. There antibodies attack and destroy the Rh positive red blood cells of the fetus resulting in a progressive decrease in the red blood cell count (anemia) and, in severe cases, heart failure. This condition is called hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN).
Receiving RhoGAM® during pregnancy, after delivery, or abortion can safely and effectively prevent production of Rh antibodies by an Rh-negative mother and prevent HDN of newborn.
