Methodology
Reflex Information:This test may automatically reflex to other tests. An additional fee may be added. The ordering physician/provider must indicate if the reflex test is NOT DESIRED. Indicate on order if no reflex test is desired.
Method Name:
Wampole IsolatorTM System
General Information:
Fungal cultures are held for 24 to 28 days. Physician and/or nurse in charge of patient will be notified immediately of any significant fungal growth.
Specimen Requirements
Using Wampole IsolatorTM Collection Kit, collect specimen as follows:
1. Disinfect stopper
of IsolatorTM tube with 70% alcohol
and allow to dry.
2. Thoroughly cleanse overlaying skin with 70% alcohol, followed by
2% iodine tincture, moving in concentric circles to periphery. Do
not remove iodine.
3. Specimen should be collected by a physician trained in this
procedure. Obtain 0.5 mL of bone marrow.
4. Place sterile, 18-gauge needle on syringe and inject bone
marrow into Wampole IsolatorTM tube by
puncturing stopper with needle. Do not
force bone marrow
into WampoleTM Isolator tube. This
will cause top to pop off.
5. Gently invert tube 4 to 5 times to mix contents.
6. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date
and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
7. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature
only. Specimen cannot be refrigerated or frozen.
Protect specimen from extreme temperatures. When shipping, try to
keep specimen as close to ambient temperature as possible.
Note: Specimen source is required on request
form for processing.
Reference Values
No growth
Automatic call-back: any positive
Day(s) Test Set Up
Monday through Sunday
Test Classification and CPT Coding
CPT Code:
87102 - isolation and presumptive identification of isolates
87106 - culture fungus, definitive identification, yeast (if
appropriate)
87107 - culture fungus, definitive identification, mold (if appropriate)
Microbiology Coding:
Proper coding for MICROBIOLOGY tests depends on what procedures are
actually performed which may depend on the organism(s) isolated.
When a culture is initially set up, organism(s) may be isolated and
a presumptive identification takes place. When/if an organism(s)
grows, a definitive identification and possible MIC of each
organism may be indicated.
