Reflex Information:This test may automatically reflex to other tests. An additional fee may be added. The ordering physician/provider must indicate if the reflex test is NOT DESIRED. Indicate on order if no reflex test is desired.
Specimen Requirements
Specimen must arrive within 8 hours of collection.
1. Prewarm to ambient temperature a JEMBEC® (chocolate agar [pill pocket]) plate supplied.
2. Obtain specimen using a culture transport swab.
3. Tilt patient’s head back to assist in opening mouth as wide as possible.
4. Depress tongue with a tongue depressor so swab does not touch tongue.
5. If patient has complained of 1 spot being sore, swab that area well.
6. Both tonsillar pillars and oropharynx should be swabbed. In 1 continuous motion:
A. Swab 1 tonsillar area up then down.
B. Move to back of throat as far down as possible and swab.
C. Move to other tonsillar area and swab.
D. Swab behind uvula and remove swab.
7. Immediately inoculate JEMBEC® plate by gently rolling swab, touching all surfaces of swab.
8. Place CO2 tablet into well provided on plate and replace lid.
9. Place plate into Ziploc® bag provided and close securely.
10. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
11. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Do not refrigerate.
