Cytology, Cervical/Vaginal, Liquid Prep and ThinPrep®

Performing Laboratory

Billings Clinic Laboratory

Methodology

Includes liquid-prep method of collection and Papanicolaou staining and microscopic cytological examination.
This test is useful for the detection of cervical cancer, its precursors, and other abnormalities of the female reproduction tract.

Note:  For Medicare beneficiaries, the ordering physician/nonphysician provider (NPP) must indicate the appropriate Pap selection on the “Gynecologic Cytology Request Form.” The ordering physician/NPP must choose either screening Pap, high risk screening Pap, or diagnostic Pap based on the patient’s medical history documented in the patient’s medical record.

Specimen Requirements

See “ThinPrep® Method” in “Pap Smear Collection Instructions” in “Cytopathology Specimen Collection and Handling” in “Special Instructions.”
Note:  Please complete a “Gynecologic Cytology Request Form” in “Request Forms” in “Special Instructions” including specimen source and all pertinent clinical data (clinical symptoms, history of malignancy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy) as well as Pap selections. Selections include non-Medicare patient section and Medicare patient section with three choices:  screening Pap, high risk screening Pap, and diagnostic Pap. It is important to submit the diagnosis code on the order. An ABN must be obtained when appropriate. See “Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN)” in “Policies-Medical Necessity and ABN” in “General Information.”
