Useful For

  • Establish or rule out a diagnosis
  • Detect an unsuspected hematologic disorder
  • Monitor effects of radiation or chemotherapy
  • These counts are used as clinical guides in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of many diseases

Specimen Requirements

  • Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.
  • Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send 1 mL of EDTA whole blood.
  • Forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
  • If there is a delay in transport of ≥24 hours, prepare fresh, peripheral blood smear and forward the EDTA tube refrigerated and the slide at ambient temperature only.
