Ferene without Prior Protein Removal

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Serum or plasma should be physically separated from cells as soon as possible with a maximum limit of two hours from the time of collection.

Plasma

  • Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s).
  • Spin down and send 1.0 mL of heparinized plasma frozen.

 

Serum

  • Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) or a serum gel tube(s).
  • Spin down and send 1.0 mL of serum frozen

Males:

1 month - 1 year:  40 - 100 ug/dL

1 - 11 years:  50 - 120 ug/dL

> 11 years:  65 - 175 ug/dL

 

Females:

0 - 1 month:  100 - 250 ug/dL

1 month - 1 year:  40 - 100 ug/dL

1 - 11 years:  50 - 120 ug/dL

> 11 years:  50 - 170 ug/dL

 

NOTE:  There is considerable diurnal variation in iron values; a.m. iron values may be as much as 1/3 higher than p.m. values.
