Test Code Billings Clinic: 4073 Triglycerides, Plasma or Serum

Important Note

Venipuncture should occur prior to N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) or Metamizole (Sulpyrine) administration due to the potential for falsely depressed results.

Performing Laboratory

Billings Clinic Laboratory: Chemistry

Useful For

  • Evaluation of risk factors in individuals with elevated cholesterol values
  • Since cholesterol and triglycerides can vary independently, measurement of both is more meaningful than the measurement of cholesterol only.

Methodology

Fossati Three-step Enzymatic Reaction with a Trinder Endpoint

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Serum or plasma should be physically separated from cells as soon as possible with a maximum limit of two hours from the time of collection.

Plasma

  • Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s).
  • Patient must be fasting (12-14 hours preferred) with water only, no tea or coffee, and must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours prior to specimen being drawn.
  • Spin down and send 1.0 mL of heparinized plasma frozen.

Serum

  • Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) or a serum gel tube(s).
  • Patient must be fasting (12-14 hours preferred) with water only, no tea or coffee, and must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours prior to specimen being drawn.
  • Spin down and send 1.0 mL of serum frozen

Storage/Stability

Specimen Type Temperature Time

Reject Due To

  • Gross icterus
  • Gross hemolysis
  • Specimens received at room temperature
