Specimen Requirements
EDTA whole blood and plasma are required for this test.
Blood for CBC
- Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.
- Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send 4 mL of unprocessed EDTA whole blood refrigerated.
- Do not centrifuge.
- Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly.
- Label specimen appropriately (blood for CBC).
Plasma for All Other Tests
- Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s).
- Patient must be fasting (12-14 hours preferred) with water only, no tea or coffee, and must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours prior to specimen being drawn.
- Spin down, separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of draw.
- Send 1 mL of heparinized plasma frozen in plastic vial.
- Avoid exposure of specimen to atmosphere.
- Label specimen appropriately (plasma for all other tests).
- Patient’s age and sex are required on request form for processing.
