Test Code Billings Clinic: 4830 Norovirus Direct Detection, Stool
Performing Laboratory
Montana Public Health Laboratory, Helena, Montana
Useful For
Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs), initially known as small round structured viruses (SRSV), are single-stranded RNA viruses. NLVs are a major cause of viral gastroenteritis in children and adults. Large outbreaks haven been reported in hospitals, cruise ships, schools, and residential homes. Based on molecular techniques, 3 genotypes have been identified. Only genotype 1 and 2 are associated with human infections. The difference between genotype 1 and 2 is not related to disease severity.
