Useful For

To aid in the detection of platelet dysfunction due to aspirin ingestion.

  • This test is not for use in patients with underlying congenital platelet abnormalities, patients with non-aspirin induced acquired platelet abnormalities or in patient receiving non-aspirin anti-platelet agents.
  • This test may be used in patients treated with selective COX-2 inhibitors.

Specimen Requirements

Do not transport specimen in pneumatic tube. Specimen must be hand delivered to laboratory, and test must be analyzed within 2 hours of draw.

  • Draw 2 full, 2-mL light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube(s), and send 4 mL of unprocessed, sodium citrate whole blood.
  • Do not centrifuge.
  • Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly at ambient temperature only.

Reference Values

Therapeutic range for platelet function:  350-549 ARU

Non-therapeutic range for platelet function:  550-700 ARU

  • Non-therapeutic range for platelet function may indicate aspirin resistance or non compliance.
