Methodology

Turbidimetric, Optical

Specimen Requirements

  • Do not transport specimen in pneumatic tube.
  • Specimen must be hand delivered to laboratory, and test must be analyzed within 2 hours of draw.
  • Draw 2 full, 2-mL light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube(s).
  • Send 4 mL of unprocessed, sodium citrate whole blood.
  • Do not centrifuge.
  • Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly at ambient temperature only.

Reject Due To

  • Clotted specimens
  • Specimens > 2 hours old
  • Specimens sent through the tube system
  • Refrigerated specimens
  • Frozen specimens
  • Centrifuged specimens
  • Patients who have taken a GP IIb/IIIa inhibitor (Aggrestat or Integrilin)

Reference Values

Reference Range:  182 - 335 PRU  (Platelet Response Units)

  • A Result less than 182 PRU indicates platelet inhibition. 
  • A Result greater than or equal to 182 PRU indicates lack of inhibition by Plavix (clopidogrel) or other P2Y12 inhibitor.
