Specimen Requirements
- Do not transport specimen in pneumatic tube.
- Specimen must be hand delivered to laboratory, and test must be analyzed within 2 hours of draw.
- Draw 2 full, 2-mL light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube(s).
- Send 4 mL of unprocessed, sodium citrate whole blood.
- Do not centrifuge.
- Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly at ambient temperature only.
Reject Due To
- Clotted specimens
- Specimens > 2 hours old
- Specimens sent through the tube system
- Refrigerated specimens
- Frozen specimens
- Centrifuged specimens
- Patients who have taken a GP IIb/IIIa inhibitor (Aggrestat or Integrilin)
Reference Values
Reference Range: 182 - 335 PRU (Platelet Response Units)
- A Result less than 182 PRU indicates platelet inhibition.
- A Result greater than or equal to 182 PRU indicates lack of inhibition by Plavix (clopidogrel) or other P2Y12 inhibitor.
