Useful For
Therapeutic phlebotomy is performed for treatment of conditions involving excess iron or red blood cells, including but not limited to:
- Hemochromatosis
- Polycythemia vera
- Porphyria cutanea tarda
Test Description
Removal of a prescribed volume of whole blood to reduce red blood cell mass or iron stores. Volume and frequency are determined by the provider based on clinical status and laboratory values.

Patient Preparation
- Patient should be well hydrated
- Recent hematocrit/hemoglobin or ferritin (within 7 days) may be required depending on protocol
- Provider order required

- Orders are valid for a maximum of 12 months. Certain requests or changes to an existing order are subject to Billings Clinic Phlebotomy Medical Director approval.
- The form must be filled out entirely. Incomplete forms will be returned.
- Laboratory test(s) to be monitored will be ordered, resulted, and evaluated prior to each Therapeutic Phlebotomy.
- Phlebotomy Medical Director review/approval can take up to 2-weeks. Please plan accordingly.
