- 1 mL of pleural fluid in green-top (lithium heparin) tube or other suitable fluid container.
- Send specimen refrigerated.
- Specimen type (fluid type/description) for each tube/container is required on request form for processing.
- Properly label (fluid type/description) each tube/container submitted.

Reference Values
The reference range have not been established for this body fluid. The test results must be integrated into the clinical context for interpretation.
Interpretive Remark:
Normal pleural fluid glucose is similar to serum concentrations. Pleural fluid transudates and most exudates usually have glucose concentrations of >60 mg/dL. Pleural fluid exudates with conditions such as parapneumonic effusion, tuberculosis, malignancy, empyema, and/or rheumatoid disease.
