Useful For

  • Evaluation of patients suspected of having acute pancreatitis
  • If ascites are present, it is occasionally used to demonstrate pancreatic inflammation.  If this is true, the level will be at least ten times that of serum.

Methodology

Ethylidene-blocked p-nitrophenyl-maltoheptaoside Substrate (Jensen and Wydeveld)

Specimen Requirements

  • 1 mL of fluid in a plain, red-top tube or other suitable container
  • Send specimen ambient
  • Specimen type (fluid type/description) for each tube/container is required on request form for processing
  • Properly label (fluid type/description) each tube submitted.
