Test Code Billings Clinic: 6053-4 (GRAM-NEGATIVE) Antimicrobial Susceptibility, Aerobic Bacteria (MIC)
Infectious
Performing Laboratory
Billings Clinic Laboratory: Microbiology
Useful For
- Susceptibility testing is done on most pathogenic aerobic organisms.
- The Microbiology Department consults with the Pharmacy and with the Infectious Disease Specialty Physicians as to which antibiotics to report.
- This decision is based on which drugs are available on the testing panels and which drugs can be utilized according to the site of infection or the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) criteria.
Methodology
Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)
Specimen Requirements
- Send infecting bacteria.
- Bacteria should be in pure culture, actively growing, placed in a proper mailing container, and labeled as an etiologic agent.
- Appropriate antimicrobials will be tested.
- Organism suspected and specimen source are required on request form for processing.
Reject Due To
- Agar plate is not acceptable.
