Methodology

Microscopic Examination

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of collection at ambient temperature only.
 
Collect specimen using SWUBE® Paddle Collection Kit supplied as follows:

  1. Specimens are best obtained at 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. or upon waking and before bowel movement or bath.
  2. Gently press paddle’s sticky side against several areas of the perianal region while spreading open perianal folds.
  3. Place paddle into transport container and tighten cap.
  4. Pinworm eggs are very infectious. Wash hands after collection.
  5. Clear ScotchTM tape may also be used for collection.
  6. At least 4 consecutive negative slides should be observed before the patient is considered free of infection.

Reject Due To

  • Specimen obtained using nontransparent [frosted] ScotchTM tape is not acceptable.
  • Stool specimen is not acceptable.

Reference Values

No pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) eggs identified

 

Enterobiasis tends to be a family infection. Therefore, it is recommended that all family members be tested.
