Specimen Requirements
Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of collection at
ambient temperature only.
Collect specimen using SWUBE® Paddle Collection Kit
supplied as follows:
- Specimens are best obtained at 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. or upon waking and before bowel movement or bath.
- Gently press paddle’s sticky side against several areas of the perianal region while spreading open perianal folds.
- Place paddle into transport container and tighten cap.
- Pinworm eggs are very infectious. Wash hands after collection.
- Clear ScotchTM tape may also be used for collection.
- At least 4 consecutive negative slides should be observed before the patient is considered free of infection.
Reject Due To
- Specimen obtained using nontransparent [frosted] ScotchTM tape is not acceptable.
- Stool specimen is not acceptable.
Reference Values
No pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) eggs identified
Enterobiasis tends to be a family infection. Therefore, it is recommended that all family members be tested.
