Test Code Billings Clinic: 6805 VAGINITIS PANEL, VAGINAL FLUID SWAB

Performing Laboratory

Billings Clinic Laboratory: Microbiology

Useful For

The BD MAX Vaginal panel is intended to aid in the diagnosis of vaginal infections in women with clinical presentation consistent with bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis and trichomoniasis. The BD MAX Vaginal Panel simultaneously detects the pathogens responsible for vaginitis due to Bacterial vaginosis markers (Lactobacillis spp., Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Bacterial Vaginosis Associated Bacteria-2 {BVAB-2}, Megaspaera-1), Candida spp. (C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. dubliniensis), Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Sample may be collected by the provider or may be self-collected by the patient.

Methodology

Multiplex PCR

Specimen Requirements

  • Specimen Type:  Vaginal fluid
  • Vaginal swab collected in BD Molecular Swab Sample Buffer Tubes
  • Sample may be collected be self-collect or provider-collect in the clinical setting only.
  • Specimens self-collected from home are not acceptable.
  • Transport up to 14 days.

Storage/Stability

Vaginal swab specimens in BD Molecular Swab Sample Buffer Tubes are stable up to 14 days at 2–30 °C

Reject Due To

  • Specimens > 14 days old
  • Specimens grossly contaminated with prescription and over-the-counter drugs, creams and/or gels.
  • Frozen specimens

Reference Values

Candida group:                 Not Detected
Candida glabrata:             Not Detected
Candida krusei                   Not Detected
Gardnerella vaginalis:     Not Detected
Trichomonas vaginalis:   Not Detected

In symptomatic patients, a “detected” result for Candida species and Trichomonas vaginalis is diagnostic of candidiasis and trichomoniasis respectively. Because Gardnerella is normally found in the vagina, a “detected” result may be suggestive of bacterial vaginosis and should be interpreted with clinical signs and symptoms. Simultaneous infections by more than one organism are common.
