Methodology

Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)/Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectometry (GC-MS)

Specimen Requirements

Chain-of-custody is recommended for this test.

  1. Collect specimen as follows:
  2. Place name and identification number on “CordStat Requisition” form and umbilical cord container.
  3. Cut a 6 inch to 8 inch segment of umbilical cord, and drain and discard any cord blood.
  4. Rinse cord segment exterior with normal saline or an equivalent rinsing solution.
  5. Place umbilical cord segment into umbilical cord container and sign the “CordStat Requisition” form.
  6. Place a bar-code sticker from the “CordStat Requisition” form over top of matching umbilical cord container.
  7. Place completed “CordStat Requisition” form with tests ordered in large pouch of plastic specimen bag.
  8. Place umbilical cord container in small pouch of plastic specimen bag and seal bag.
  9. Place specimen bag in cardboard box, close box, affix“Box Seal” at indicated place, and initial seal.

Screening portion of the assay format will be run the day the specimen is received in the laboratory. Screen negative results are reported that day. Screen positive results are confirmed and reported in an additional 24 to 48 hours.
