Useful For

  • A titer of ≥1:32 is suggestive of viral pneumonia.
  • High titers are also seen in African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, hemolytic anemia, mumps orchitis, and Blackwater fever.

Methodology

Red Cell Agglutination at 4° C

Specimen Requirements

  • Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s).
  • Serum gel tube is not acceptable.
  • Incubate tube for 60 minutes at 37° C prior to centrifugation.
  • Do not refrigerate prior to separation of serum from red cells.
  • Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.

Reject Due To

  • Specimens drawn in red gel tube
