Useful For

Useful for evaluation of a bone marrow biopsy for diagnosis of hematologic and/or non-hematologic diseases.

Methodology

Includes tissue processing, hematoxylin-and-eosin stain, iron stain, wright's-giemsa stain and additional stains if necessary for interpretation.

Specimen Requirements

Submit the following specimens to the laboratory:

  • 1 mL of bone marrow aspirate- white top tube
  • 1 - 2mL of bonemarrow aspirate - in EDTA tube (if appropriate) - see mail out form
  • 1 - 2mL of bone aspirate - in NaHep tube (if appropriate) - see mailout form
  • 1 bone core biopsy - Fix specimen in zinc-formalin for 1 to 2 hours
  • 1 bone marrow clot biopsy - Fix specimen in zinc-formalin for 1 to 2 hours
  • CBC and Manuel Diff - same day results (*)
  • Peripheral smears - 3 unstained, unfixed slides
  • Aspirate smears - 8 to 10 unstained, unfixed slides
  • Touch preps - 4 to 5 unstained, unfixed slides

Submit the following forms to the laboratory:

  • Mail Out Order Form
  • Bone Marrow Log Sheet
  • Slide Transport Sheet
  • Pathologist Test Request Form
  • Reference Pathology/Non-Gynecologic Cytology Request Form

A pathology/diagnostic report, brief history, and referring clinician's telephone number are required on request form for processing.

Please complete all forms found in "resources" and forward them the specimens.

*If a CBC has not been drawn the day of the biopsy, please have the CBC and Manual Diff ordered by the physician, drawn and send the CBC tube and results with the Bone Marrow specimens.

Reference Values

An interpretive report will be provided.
